Grunherz ! Jg.54 Fw-190A-5 over the Soviet Union

I’m not really into WW2 German aircraft, generally the subjects I know best are others. However there’s no denying that Luftwaffe fighters and bombers are interesting subjects for a number of reasons. The historical importance of types like the FW-190 then can not be denied, reason why even if I’m not a Luftwaffe fanatic there’s quite a few of these in my stash.

Not only that, the FW-190 is one of those subjects for which I keep buying kits if they are good ones and my latest kit purchase was exactly a 190, or better, two in a single box:

Well, I’m a big fan of Eduard’s dual combos, two good quality kits with a few aftermarket goodies and some interesting decal options. The early Jg.54 A-5s in particular are also quite interesting for their unusual camouflage so I’ve eyed this box for a while. When I found one at a price that I felt was right I duly ordered it and here it is.

Unfortunately when compared to other similar packages this one does have much extras, only the “basic” PE set and masks, no resin or other stuff. The number of decal options is also not as high as in other boxes (the Aussie Eight Spitfire for example) but in any case they have a couple of A5s with the kind of field camo that made this unit famous so I’m happy enough.

I’ll show the content of the box at a later stage, in the meantime here’s a peek inside:

I will not build both aircraft for this GB but only the A-5. Here are the two I now have to choose from:

Now 7+- features a very impressive camouflage, K wears a simpler one. Of course there’s something good in having a simpler camo and if choosing K I may also add a bomb, that would make the model more interesting. Since I know little about the schemes used by this unit over the Eastern Front, I’ll likely ask questions here to the real expert. I understand that a lot would probably be educated guesswork but I’d like to get as close as possible to the colours actually used. I also know that fortunately a few colour pictures of these aircraft exist, I have some in an old book, I’ll look for others.
