The Menhir of Champ Dolent is situated near the medieval town of Dol de Bretagne.

It is the largest standing megalith in northern Brittany, with its impressive height of about 10 meters and a circumference of 8.70 meters at its widest part.

Despite its grandeur, the origins and purpose of these ancient monoliths remain shrouded in mystery.

Excavations have revealed that human occupation in Brittany dates back to around 700,000 BC, but our knowledge of the Neolithic people who erected these megaliths between 5500 BC and 2000 BC is limited.

The Menhir of Champ Dolent is among these enigmatic structures, standing as a silent sentinel from a distant past. With little oral tradition to shed light on their significance, questions abound regarding their original purpose.

Were they erected as religious monuments, symbols of reverence for the natural world, or perhaps as solemn markers for burial sites? The answers to these questions continue to elude us, adding to the allure and mystique of these ancient wonders.

The Legend of Satan and Menhir of Champ Dolent

The Menhir du Champ Dolent is no ordinary stone; it holds a legendary connection to the founding of St. Samson Cathedral in Dol de Bretagne.

According to folklore, Satan once stood atop Mont Dol, one of two hills overlooking an ancient marsh. From this vantage point, he spied upon St. Samson as the saint labored to erect a cathedral on the neighboring hill, Dol de Bretagne.

Enraged by the prospect of a Christian sanctuary rising upon what he considered to be his territory, Satan hurled a massive stone towards the cathedral. The colossal rock struck the north tower, causing damage before finally coming to rest in the village of Kerfeunteun-Carfantin.

This legendary event is commemorated by the Menhir du Champ Dolent, serving as a tangible link between the spiritual and earthly realms, and adding to the rich tapestry of folklore that envelops Brittany’s ancient landscape.

The other two legends

The Menhir du Champ Dolent is steeped in myth and legend, with multiple tales woven into its ancient presence.

One story tells of a fierce conflict between two brothers, their battle so intense that it spilled blood that flowed down into the valley below, where it powered the mill wheel. Moved by compassion, the saints intervened, summoning a colossal stone from the earth to separate the warring siblings and bring an end to their strife.

Another legend speaks of the Menhir’s mystical nature, suggesting that it has the power to sink into the earth each time someone passes away. This enigmatic behavior is believed to continue until the stone disappears entirely, marking the end of the world and signaling doomsday.

These legends, passed down through generations, add to the mystique surrounding the Menhir du Champ Dolent.
