Outlander’s Sam Heughan breaks silence on ‘terrifying secret’ he’s been hiding

Sam Heughan, the star who brings Jamie Fraser to life on Outlander, has admitted that he is constantly wary of inadvertently revealing secrets about the time-traveling show’s finale.

For more than ten years, the 44 year old Scottish actor has captivated fans worldwide in his lead role on the Starz hit series, appearing alongside co-star Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser).

With the second half of Outlander’s seventh season currently on air and the last season’s release date still under wraps, the conclusion’s details are kept under strict lock and key, leaving fans in suspense over what will happen to their beloved characters. As per the Scottish Express, Sam, who is the sole cast member privy to the final outcome, pondered the significant pressure of this knowledge.

Speaking with The Scotsman, he mentioned: “I do sometimes think oh god, am I going to say something?” His interview was highlighted by the publication as it celebrated top Scots for Burns Night, where Heughan humorously compared his sporran to Mary Poppins’ magical bag due to its surprising variety of items, reports the Daily Record.

Famous for wearing his kilt and sporran, Heughan was quizzed about its contents, initially downplaying it to “the usual” before listing a remarkable inventory.

He listed off items such as “Lip balm, iPhone, protein bar, sides to the scene [notes for filming], hip flask, eye drops, compass, deck of cards, sunglasses, various Scottish stones and small mementos I’ve pilfered from set,” giving a glimpse into what he carries around.

With his characteristic wit, he described the sporran as “It’s like the Mary Poppins bag, or the Tardis.”

A typical accessory in Highland dress, the sporran is crafted from either leather or fur and fastens at the front of a kilt. It essentially becomes a wallet or container, compensating for the kilt’s lack of pockets.

Sartorial tradition dictates that Scotsmen should wear nothing beneath their kilts. Heughan, known for his Scottish heritage, has previously declared his affection for kilts, owning enough to wear a different one each day.

In a previous conversation, he admitted: “Yes kilts, I’ve got a fair few. One for every day of the week probably. And one for each day, in between.”

Adding to his collection, he mentioned: “I’ve got a lot of kilts, whether it’s for a special occasion or sitting down reading my book it certainly does help if you’re wearing a kilt whilst reading my book.”

Reflecting on the experience of donning a kilt in Outlander, he described the learning process: “You do have to learn how to wear a kilt, and it’s certainly very liberating and very freeing, but surprisingly very comfortable, to ride a horse in a kilt. I was surprised by that.”
