Thessaloniki’s White Tower: A Historic Transition from Red to White

Discover the story of the famous White Tower through photographs captured during my evening walk along the beautiful Aegean Sea shoreline on Nikis Avenue. This visual journey takes you from a distant view to up close with the tower in Thessaloniki, Greece.

When you arrive in Thessaloniki and visit Nikis Avenue, the first significant and eye-catching sight from a distance is the White Tower. It’s a crucial part of the history of Thessaloniki and all of Greece. I walked along the avenue, camera in hand, taking pictures from afar to up close to the White Tower, learning a lot about this tourist attraction with a history filled with pain and valuable lessons. It was rush hour, with people heading back home after work while others enjoyed the sea view, taking photos, fishing, or just sitting and enjoying the scenery. Some were on evening boat cruises in the Aegean Sea. The Golden Hour on the Aegean Sea was amazing that day.

The White Tower in Thessaloniki, originally known as the ‘Red Tower’, was built in the 15th century after the city fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1430. Under Ottoman rule, it served as a prison and execution site, known by various names over time, including ‘Lions Tower’ in the 16th century, ‘Fortress of Kalamaria’ in the 18th century, and also ‘Janissary Tower’ and ‘Blood Tower.’ It was a place marked by sadness and fear.

In 1890, following the Ottomans’ departure from Thessaloniki, the tower was painted white and renamed the White Tower, symbolizing a new era of hope and rebirth for the city. This transformation turned the tower into a beacon of new beginnings and hope.

Now, the tower stands not only as a historical fortress but also as a symbol of the city. It holds within its walls the rich history of Thessaloniki and Greece, highlighting its significant role in Greek history.
