What You Need to Know: The Russian Navy has decommissioned the Dmitry Donskoy, the last active Typhoon-class submarine and the largest submarine ever built. Initially entering service in 1981 as TK-208, it was the lead vessel of the Project 941 Akula class. After a significant overhaul, it reentered service in 2002 under its new name.

-The Typhoon-class featured unique design elements, including multiple pressure hulls and amenities like a sauna and swimming pool, accommodating 160 crew members on extended voyages. Equipped with 20 RSM-52 SLBMs carrying up to 10 MIRVs each, it was designed to counter the U.S. Ohio-class submarines.
-A new Borei-class submarine bearing the name Dmitry Donskoy is under construction, continuing the legacy.
Over a year ago, Russia decommissioned the Project 941 Akula (NATO reporting name Typhoon) heavy nuclear-powered missile-carrying submarine cruiser Dmitry Donskoy several years earlier than expected. In fact, it had been only three years ago that the Kremlin announced the boat would remain in service until at least 2026, even as its role was reportedly limited to that of a weapons test platform for the new Borei-, Borei-A-, Yasen-and Yasen-M-class submarines.
