Bondowoso-east Java, Indonesia. Situs Batu Labheng ( a giant Stone door), an ancient heritage, older then mesolithicum era

Bondowoso – Bondowoso has a number of historical heritage sites which are still well maintained and cared for by the local community.

One of them is the Batu Labeng Site in Banyuputih Village, Wringin District. It is said that the giant stone is used by local people to monitor the planting season.

The Batu Labeng site is 7.5 meters high and 4.5 meters wide, and consists of two levels. The bottom directly touches the ground, and above it there are two rocks which are also quite large.

Interestingly, there is a cavity or hole created between the two stones. Even without supporting pillars, the stone still stands strong. This stone hole made the local people name it Batu Labeng. If interpreted in Madurese, the everyday language of the Bondowoso people, it means door stone.

Its location on a hill allows visitors to enjoy other views such as the Madura Strait sea on the north side. On the east and south sides you are treated to quite exotic mountain panoramas.

To reach the Batu Labeng location, the journey required from Bondowoso city center is only around 30 minutes. The road to the Batu Labeng site is also very easy and good, because it is only 300 meters from the Bondowoso-Besuki Situbondo provincial road.

However, visitors who use four-wheeled vehicles to reach the Batu Labeng site must first turn around, considering that the access road is still quite narrow and can only be passed by two-wheeled vehicles.

One of the Bahrian visitors, a Bondowoso resident, admitted that he chose to visit the Batu Labeng Site, apart from wanting to enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery, he also wanted to know more about this site which is quite famous in the Bondowoso area.

“I think this stone is very unique. Let’s imagine a stone this big, how to arrange it like this. “That’s why it’s not surprising that this stone is very sacred to the community”.
He hopes that in the future the road access to the Batu Lebang site will be improved again, so that it can attract more tourists to visit.

“In Batu Labeng, the problem is that the net is still narrow, hopefully in the future it can be widened again,” he added.
